Bugs, birds and blooming flowers at Spence Children’s Cottage

At YWCA Canberra, we love welcoming in the new seasons and teaching young children about the importance of seasonal life cycles. With the arrival of Spring, we thought, what better way to celebrate the new season than to engage the children in some fun spring-themed activities!

Earlier in the year, educators from our Spence Children’s Cottage Service planted a collection of bulbs in the centre’s front garden. With the weather quickly warming up, the bulbs germinated, blossoming into beautiful flowers around the centre.

Once they had grown, the children were invited outside to observe the flowers, along with the many creatures that gathered in the garden including, magpies, ladybugs and bees.

To help them continue their exploration of Spring, our educators invited the children to join in on a discussion about the different seasons and the many environmental changes. The children were also fascinated to learn about the life cycles of insects and birds.
