Learning through the stomach at Currawong

During February and March, the preschoolers and senior toddlers at our Currawong Early Childhood Service have shown an interest in cooking, which our educators have been very happy to oblige!

The preschoolers have brainstormed a (very long) list of foods they want to cook. So far, they have managed to work their way through cookies, honey joys, fruit skewers and pancakes.

The senior toddlers had a bit more of a savoury craving, and started their cooking experiences with pizzas. Each child could choose which toppings they wanted, but the educators put a numerical spin on the activity by getting the children to count the different toppings as they went. What better way to learn counting than with pizza?

The children have loved these experiences, and the Currawong educators will continue teasing out the literacy, numeracy, social science and science lessons as they embed cooking in their educational program and practice.
