Celebrating Children’s Week at YWCA Canberra

Children’s Week at YWCA Canberra is one of the most exciting weeks of the year, as it is a time to celebrate the rights and achievements of children around the world and within our very own services.

Children’s week is a fantastic opportunity for children to demonstrate their talents, skills and abilities in a safe and secure space, where they can feel uplifted, inspired and encouraged to embrace everything childhood has to offer.

Currawong:

This year at our Currawong Early Childhood Learning service, we celebrated Children’s week grandly through special themed days and a range of fun-filled learning activities.

On Monday, our Currawong service celebrated book week through dress up and story sessions. On the day, the children were asked to bring in their favourite storybooks from home and share these stories among their friends. The children were encouraged to dress up as their favourite storybook characters and engage in imaginative play.

On Tuesday the children were asked to bring in their bikes, trikes and favourite toys to participate in a range of physical activities. During the day, both the children and Educators were invited to dress in their activewear and participate in competitions such as running races, skipping races, crawling races and even an egg and spoon race.

Thursday was a busy day planned with water play and outdoor activities. On this day the Educators set up a rainbow arch sprinkler in the yard for the Pre-schoolers and Toddlers to play.

On the last day of children’s week, the children got to participate in a fun-filled Friyay, where the whole Currawong community came together to engage in outdoor learning experiences. Some of the activities included: collage making, face painting and watching the Lion King film while eating tasty party food.

Winyu

A week before Children’s week, our Winyu staff organised a book week event to engage the children in stories aimed to inspire their imagination. To help set up the event, the Educators hung up posters from the ceiling that read out “What is your favourite book?”, along with pictures of the nominated children books of the Year 2020.

At the end of the week, the Educators invited all children and staff to dress up as their favourite storybook characters and engage in activities where they were able to role play as their characters.

The following week on Children’s week, the Winyu educators planned a range of activities that involved the children’s choice of play and fun learning experiences.

During the week, the children got to engage in a whole range of role-play activities where they got to pretend to be different professionals such as a nail salon owner, a gardener, a cook and an artist.

At the end of the week, the Winyu children and Educators got to enjoy a beautiful afternoon tea picnic outdoorsFor their entertainment, they threw a talent show where each child was able to show off their singing, dancing and art-making skills.
