At YWCA Canberra, we incorporate sustainable practices and teachings throughout our children’s services.
At the Winyu Early Childhood Service in Gungahlin, the team has incorporated natural and recycled materials in artistic expression with the children. They have been using leaves, sand, sticks, paint, glue, plastic bottles and bottle caps to provide children with first-hand experiences of living sustainably, while having some fun!
The service’s children, families and staff bring in materials to be used in the learning provocations, which also encourages discussions at home about recycling and sustainable practices.
By incorporating natural materials, the educators have an opportunity to teach children about our environment and to promote appreciation for the natural world. The Winyu team is increasing the level of natural materials they introduce into their resource bank and learning spaces.
This focus on sustainability at Winyu is an ongoing project, and the team will continue to engage in this important learning and development together with the staff, families, children and local community.
